Universal Hospital in Abu Dhabi has been caring for a baby boy named "Sebastian" for nine months now since her Filipina mother left her after giving birth to him.
The staff said that the woman was on her final stages of labor when she was rushed to the hospital. She has no insurance documents at hand, so she told the staff that she will leave first to arrange for the payment, but never returned since then.
Dr. Shabeer Nellikode, founder and managing director of Universal Hospital said "We couldn't leave the baby so we took the responsibility and have been caring him for the last nine months". Dr. Essam Ali, a senior quality manager, said that their medical staffs have been liaising with the Philippine Embassy regarding this matter for some time now. He even visits Sebastian everyday. He also said that the woman left behind the baby and escaped for the possibilities of being jailed as she was impregnated out of wedlock by a man in Abu Dhabi. She is also afraid if her husband knew about this, it will ruin her marriage.
Several staffs including Dr. Ali have the intentions and offered to adopt Sebastian, however, the procedure is very complicated. Dr. Ali is planning to travel all the way to the Philippines to find ways on how to adopt the baby.
The hospital cannot issue a birth certificate for Sebastian as her mother didn't provide any marriage certificate or passport. The Philippine Embassy on the other hand has issued a passport to Sebastian, after months of negotiations, but must seek legal clearance if going to travel outside the country. The spokesman of Philippine Embassy also stated that the mother is no longer interested to Sebastian , however, they can no longer give further details now as the investigations is ongoing.
